SELMAN CREATES ILLUSTRATED MATCH BALL

Culture: January 21, 2019

For one month, every four years, global attention shifts to “the beautiful game”. The World Cup is a sporting event like no other, one which thrives off the accessibility and ubiquitous nature of football.

Diehards and casual fans alike file into stadiums, city squares, pubs, cafes, and living rooms to cheer on their home or newly adopted nations. Moments of magic on the pitch transcend both the boundaries of country and shackles of language.

There is a camaraderie in the collective experience of a jaw-dropping golazo, a perfect first touch or the unbearable tension of a match decided by penalties. The players themselves carry the weight of millions who share in the suffering and adulation of both heartbreak and glory. It may be war on the pitch, but ultimately one that yields the best in humanity.

The Selman studio was no exception to the enchantment of the 2018 World Cup. As they counted down the days to kick-off, lines were drawn, dividing rooting interests and paving the way for some good-natured smack talk.

When the games commenced the air was full of collective “ooh’s and aah’s”, screams and perhaps a few stray expletives. The Selman studio quickly realised they needed to channel their obsession into a creative outlet. The Design Director, Anne Di Lillo proposed to commemorate the event with a design for each of of the national teams posted daily to the @selman_fc Instagram account.

Anne developed some design parameters to keep the illustrations working as a set. The entire Selman crew joined in the spirit and contributed illustrations. When it dawned on them that there were 32 team illustrations and 32 panels on a traditional ball, they had no choice but to create a custom Selman WC18 match ball and companion booklet.
